Google January 2020 Core Update
January 13, 2020
A broad core update was released in January - and with a large number of websites impacted on a global scale, it was a big one. Although it was a global core update (meaning: the update was not specific to any region, language, or category of web sites), most third-party data companies noticed that pages related to ‘Your Money or Your Life’ topics (such as e-commerce sites, medical sites, and news websites) were hit; either by gaining or losing visibility.
Google Redesigns Its Desktop Search Results

In the new design, the URL is no longer placed between the title tag and the meta description. At the top of the snippet, you will now find the URL in black along with an ‘Ad’ label for paid campaigns, and favicons for the organic search results. Whereas Google says that with the new look the paid results became more visible as the ‘Ad’ label shows right at the top, users find the ads harder to identify; the ‘Ad’ label could pass for a favicon.
As of January 24th, Google has removed the favicons from desktop search results again, stating: “We’re dedicated to improving the desktop experience for Search, and as part of our efforts we rolled out a new design last week, mirroring the design that we’ve had for many months on mobile. (...) While early tests for desktop were positive, we are always incorporating feedback from our users. We are experimenting with a change to the current desktop favicons, and will continue to iterate on the design over time”. In the next couple of weeks, we may experience different desktop search results; where some may see no favicons, some may see search results with favicons in different placements.
New Shopping Section In Organic Search Results: Popular Products

Google has introduced a new section to its organic search results. Searching for clothes, shoes or accessories online, you can now find an overview of popular products from stores across the web. Going through the popular products, you can further filter the results by size, style, and department; read reviews; and quickly compare prices and online stores.
“To make this feature possible, Google indexes and organizes products from over a million online shops, and updates this information regularly. Just as we don’t charge sites to be part of the Google Search index, participating retailers appear in this new feature for free”.
In order for your products to show up in the popular products section, you’re encouraged to add product schema on your site, and/or set up product feeds in Google Merchant Center. (Rolling out in the US in English first).
Latest Featured Snippet Update

Google has announced that when you rank as a featured snippet, your webpage won’t appear in the organic search results on page 1 a second time. “Now, a webpage only gets one opportunity to appear on Page 1”.
This update however, has left the SEO community with a lot of questions: what happens with the regular organic listing (is it being pushed to the top of page 2, or even further)? When you lose your featured snippet, will your regular organic listing rank on page 1 again? How will Google Search Console display your ranking data now (as position 1, or will it take the regular organic listing’s rank on page #)? What happens when there are two featured snippets? - [BLOG] When we search for “how to”, the result on Google often includes video snippets - videos with a step-to-step explanation of how to fix it, how to build it, how to remove it, how to cut it. When we click the video, we are redirected to YouTube and watch the clip. But from a brand’s perspective, it would be much better if we could drive that traffic to our own website.
